HVAC Contractor
Industry Overview
The weather and the economy drive the heating and cooling industry. People pay attention to what makes them uncomfortable, and they want to be as comfortable as their budget allows. The more uncomfortable, the quicker they want comfort. When it is hot or cold, HVAC people are busy. During the in-between seasons business can be slow.
Company Perspective
For S&S Heating, Cooling & Sheet Metal, in addition to the busy summer and winter times, there's also a spurt of activity at the beginning of the cooling and heating seasons when home owners are encouraged to have their systems inspected for safe and efficient operation. To even out the busy-slow cycles, S&S installs systems in new construction. However, even that portion of the business is affected by the weather. In rainy weather building contractors can not get the structures framed to allow the HVAC people to do their work. The company also is experiencing an increase in its commercial HVAC business and is looking for more.
Company Issues / Concerns
As S&S expanded its business, moving into more new construction and commercial work to become busier throughout the year, the structure of the company needed to change. More specific information was needed by the employees and the managers to track the additional projects. There were also concerns about the cost-effectiveness of the jobs that were being accomplished.
Solutions
The George S. May International Company assisted S&S Heating, Cooling & Sheet Metal with several specific projects. These allowed the business to better control the work done by the employees and track costs for budgeting and accounting purposes. Pricing was a concern. GSMIC determined that the pricing for the larger jobs was on target but the pricing for smaller jobs needed adjustment. Scheduling was improved and specific job descriptions were developed for better management control.
"The survey showed I needed better organization in order to manage better," said Mark Staron, president of S&S. "It is amazing how George S. May International Company understood our needs. My business has permanently changed. We are satisfied with your professional work and we look forward to your "Retainer" visit.
