Repairing the Repair Shop
Maintenance Company Gets a Little Maintenance of its Own

About Fleet Maintenance of Texas, Inc.
Fleet Maintenance of Texas, Inc., is a full service repair and maintenance facility for trucks, tractor trailers and specialized equipment, including ambulances, drill rigs, boom trucks, tankers and auto haulers. They take a personal interest in providing a broad range of expert, unique services unmet by any other company in the Austin area. With a “whenever you need us, we’ll be there” attitude, highly trained truck service technicians are on 24-hour emergency call.

The Challenge
Established in 1969, the 30-year old company is a trusted, family-owned operation, which provides excellent service to a large client base of city and state agencies, large and small corporations, and private owner operators. But, unfortunately, the business operations were not profitable for over a period of three years. Fleet Maintenance wanted to develop a strong sales and operations team, so that the business could be profitable and the owner could begin semi-retirement and position the business for succession planning.

After George S. May International completed its initial analysis, it became clear that there were issues with the business’s ability to control its expenditures and measure performance. For example, Fleet Maintenance of Texas, Inc. had over $60,000 in accounts receivable, for over 60 day periods. There were no measures of performance and limited financial data for review or upon which to make decisions.

The George S. May Solution
The George S. May consulting team quickly developed an organizational structure for the company.

Working with Patrick Callan, the vice president and co-owner of Fleet Maintenance of Texas, George S. May put into place guidelines and strategies to address the operations and management, such as:

  • Developed a comprehensive sales strategy
  • Developed sales professional training programs, processes and plans for recruiting, hiring, incentives and compensation
  • Implemented metrics management in order to run the business in real time, resulting in a reporting and measurement format.
  • Developed a flow chart for the service department
  • Developed break even sales volume and a pricing structure, which helped control the company’s expenditures
  • Re-adjusted marketing budget
  • Reduced advertising costs
  • Reduced sales payroll costs

The Benefits

  • Cost savings of $187,000
  • Tools in place to measure, monitor and manage expenditures
  • Strengthened salesforce
  • Owners can financially plan ahead, instead of looking day-by-day

“The performance from George S. May’s management consultant well exceeded my expectations; he literally read my mind everyday. His tireless work on this project has shown us how to produce measurable results and perform new, effective operational duties, including sales programs, incentive plans and controlled advertising.” –- Patrick Callan, Vice President and Co-Owner, Fleet Maintenance of Texas, Inc.
